Where is the best place in Kenya to see the Wildebeest Migration?

Wildebeest Migration The wildebeest migration tends to start around the middle of July when hundreds and thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. By the end of September, most will have arrived, and by early November they will be heading back to the Serengeti. Here are a few things to note:

  1. In practice, the best months to see the wildebeest migration are August and September
  2. Some years can be spectacular, others less so. Sometimes the herds arrive early, sometimes late.
  3. There is no one crossing point, and the herds cross at different point each year.

Although you can never know exactly where a Mara River crossing will take place, it makes sense to stay in a camp or lodge located by the river. There are also various hot spots, which are traditional crossing points. If you stay near one of these, and by the river, you have done your best to get the ideal location.

My number one suggestion is Governors Camp. This is close to traditional crossing points, and is set right on the Mara River. It is no coincidence that the BBC chose this camp to film Big Cat Diary. The camp is actually made up of three - of which Little Governors is the most sought after. Please ask for advice, but note that early booking is essential.

My next suggestion is Ashnil Mara Camp, again right on the Mara River and you'll have the bonus of being close to hippos. The camp even put on a hippo breakfast. It is still a luxury camp with just 40 tents, but less expensive than Governors Camp. In fact the 7 night Ultimate Safari and Beach holiday uses this camp.

My third suggestion is Mara Serena Safari Lodge, again a 5* lodge in a fantastic position right by the river. Many people tell of seeing animals from their room, which are like domed huts and all facing the river. Again you'll see hippos and crocodiles as a bonus.
